SBIG STXL 11002 Full Frame Transfer Monochrome CCD Camera - Size 36 mm x 24 mm
Kodak KAI-11002M Sensor with Anti Blooming - Sensor Size 36 mm x 24.7 mm - Pixel 9 µm x 9 µm
The thermoelectrically cooled camera (ready for self-guiding) with 4008 x 2672 pixels supplies internal image processing for high end imaging, but can also be used for precision photometry.
The SBIG STXL-11002M Basic CCD Camera Package utilizes a Kodak KAI-11002M full-frame CCD sensor with 4008 x 2672 pixels at 9 microns. This camera package provides a highly reliable even-illumination shutter with a shorter backfocus to accommodate camera lenses. Unmatched flat field accuracy for high precision photometry and high end imaging. Superior two-stage cooling -60 °C below ambient with air only. Uses STX electronics with a full frame image buffer and the system is water cooling ready. For remote observatories, Ethernet and USB 2.0 are included.
Conquering The Heat:
Achieving the most efficient use of space and weight while maximizing cooling capability of the camera, the STXL uses the same pin fin heat sink design as the STX series cameras. Even though this type of heat sink tends to be more expensive then related parallel fin heat sinks, the results speak for themselves. Achieves temperature delta of -60 °C in 5 minutes.
Developing The Shutter:
When taking flat fields with exposures of less than a second or even several seconds, even-illumination is critical, very common when taking sky flats. SBIG STXL camera even-illumination shutter was designed for highly reliable, even illumination, of the sensor even at short exposures. This design goes back since the founding of SBIGs mechanical shutters production.
Processing The Image:
The STXL is the first large format camera by SBIG with user-selectable automatic image processing. Users can select from eight levels of filter strength to suit his or her needs. To accentuate the number of warm pixels, progressive 30 second dark frames were taken. One frame has unprocessed, the second frame has a medium filter, and the third frame has the most aggressive filter. Each successive image has correspondingly lower noise in the image and shows fewer bright pixels.
Optional Filter Wheels:
The optional self-guiding filter wheel on the STXL series has long been recognized as the best, most precise way to guide long exposure astrophotos, especially with commercial SCTs. One commong compliant, however, is finding bright stars when guiding through narrowband or dark filters. The filter wheel on the STXL incorporates the self-guiding CCD inside the front cover of the filter wheel so the guider can pick off light from the guide stars, before passing through the filters. Problem solved with two adjustment knobs on the filter wheel base, one for focus and the other for moving the pick-off mirror.
Power supply:
A universal 100-240 VAC power supply is included.
